Digital photo-montage comprising over 300 photographs
I created this image to celebrate the historic architecture that defines the heart of Greenwich and gives it its unique character. The area covered was redesigned by surveyor Joseph Kay in 1829-31 and contains Greenwich market (where the cobbles are pictured) and Nicholas Hawksmoor’s St Alfege Church (built 1712-1714). I live nearby and have visited the market countless times, including for a year where I ran a stall at weekends selling my artwork. The multi-perspective joiner-image is inspired by David Hockney who pioneered the idea. The resulting stitched image is very high-resolution (over 50,000 pixels wide) so works well as a large-format print.
The market, like all physical retail, has its struggles, not helped by a sometimes-callous landlord, but maintains its unique and cosy atmosphere and is a major attraction in the area. I’d urge people to support this fantastic market and shop locally because its future and unique character is by no means guaranteed.
